The technique was famously perfected by Fire Lord Ozai's brother, Iroh. While he discovered lightning *redirection* by applying waterbending principles during his imprisonment in Ba Sing Se, he originally developed the art of lightning *generation* through a deep understanding of separating yin and yang energies within one's own spirit. He later taught Zuko the art of redirection; however, contrary to popular belief, Zuko eventually mastered generation as well, successfully creating and firing a lightning bolt during Sozin's Comet.
